STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Known as “The Man with Red Horn,” Swedish R&B funk and jazz trombone player Nils Landgren + The Funk Unit and special guest China Moses rocked out to a sold out crowd at the Stockholm Jazz Festival on Wednesday night. Magnum Coltrane Price (Bass), Jonas Wall ( Saxophone), Petter Bergander (Trumpet), Andy Pfeiler(Guittar) and 2017 Jazz Musician of The Year Robert Mehmet Ikiz graced the stage with Nils Landgren for a number before bringing out the talented China Moses – for the perfect melting pot of instrumentation and harmony.
China Moses, the daughter of singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and director Gilbert Moses (who encouraged her to be herself as well as providing her with guidance to the music business) took the audience on a journey as she performed songs such as Unbreakable, Running, Love Gone Bad by Chris Clark, Breaking Point, and On Your Way Down to name a few.
Nils Landgren (recognized as one of the best trombone players ever) +The Funk Unit complimented the vocals with a dynamic stringent of solo performances keeping the audience enticed minute-after-minute.
THE NILS LANDGREN + FUNK UNIT TALK SHOW
In a interesting twist, the show turned into the “Nils Landgren + Funk Unit” Talk Show as he took time out to sit down in a one-on-one two-part discussion with the Los Angeles born -Paris raised China Moses. Host of her very own television show, Moses shared some of her intimate and private moments throughout her personal life and musical journey – that kept the audience glued to their seats and filled with chuckles.
“My mom the amazing Dee Dee Bridgewater, taught me to be myself and NOT to try and be like her. She also told me this, in music tell the story first then branch off while singing into your own melody and ALWAYS be nice to the band,” said China Moses from the stage at Hörsalen, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern.
“My dad who is unfortunately not with us today (passed away when China was 15), had a drawn out plan for me in the music business to sign with Virgin Records,” said China Moses to Nils Landgren. “I honestly didn’t know I had this musical side in me, so thanks to him.”
Album Collaboration in the Future?
Moses who has performed with her mother Dee Dee Bridewater on several occaisions, joked about the possibility of hitting the road with The Funk Unit along with an album! Her new album Nightintales is currently out now and the tour extends throughout Europe from October 13 before ending December 8 in Vienna, Austria.
