AKRON, Ohio — Gabrielle Brown-Mitchell signed her National Letter of Intent to continue her education at the University of Akron as the third member of the class of 2022 that will join the Akron women’s basketball team for the 2018-19 season, announced on Thursday by acting head coach Melissa Jackson.
“We are very excited to welcome Gabby to our Akron Family,” said Jackson “She is a winner both in the classroom and on the basketball court. She comes from a very successful high school program that competes for championships on a yearly basis. We can’t wait to add her competitiveness and winning attitude to our program.”
Brown-Mitchell, a 5-7 guard from local powerhouse Solon High School, averaged 11.8 points per game, 3.0 assists, 2.2 steals and shot at a 48-percent clip from behind the arc in her senior season.
The four-time letterwinner was named a three-time Defensive Player of The Year, took the most charges in Solon women’s basketball history, and compiled an 89-20 overall record in her career, including a 27-3 record in 2018 and a Division 1 runner-up finish in the state of Ohio. Brown-Mitchell has also excelled in the classroom and owns a 3.7 GPA.
“Gabby takes great pride in defense. That is one of the best things about her game. She will add athleticism and toughness to that end of the floor,” stated Jackson “Offensively, Gabby has the ability to space the floor with her three-point shooting. She is also a very good passer and makes good decisions with the basketball. She can play multiple guard positions for us and will add depth to a very strong backcourt.”
