GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – Guatemalans have voted in Alejandro Giammattei of the Vamos party as the country’s next president.
The 63-year-old member of the conservative party is a former surgeon — who defeated former First Lady Sandra Torres from the centrist National Unity of Hope party.
In the runoff election, Dr. Giammattei collected election 58.26 percent of the votes after 98 percent of voting centres had been counted.
Former First Lady Sandra Torres received about 40 percent of the votes.

Giammattei was making his fourth bid for the presidency with a promise to fight criminality and corruption.
