PARIS, France — Lionel Messi reached another milestone in his illustrious career as he became the first men’s footballer to win the Ballon d’Or award six times at the Paris gala on Monday.
The 31-year-old beat out Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool forward Sadio Mane who finished fourth in the final voting.

Messi now has earned the award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019 — giving him one more than Cristiano Ronaldo, who has five.
Thus far, Lionel Messi has scored 46 times for club and country in 2019.
