Jarell Perry on being an artist, “Typical day for music for me starts at around 6 or 7pm and ends at 5 or 6 in the morning. I’m usually in the studio writing or more recently, rehearsing for upcoming shows.” The singer/songwriter Perry mentions his latest project’s with (Chris Brown & Justin Bieber) and what his fans can expect from his upcoming‘Simple Things EP’ set for release in early May 2012!
ADRIAN: You just released ‘Here We Go Again’ your second single, can you discuss your ‘Simple Things EP’ set for release in early May 2012?
Jarell Perry: Simple Things is a collection of songs I’ve written with friends in Los Angeles over the last couple months. I’ve spent the last couple years honing my craft as a writer on every genre from pop/rock to Dutch House, recording hundreds of songs. But this EP is very relevant to where I am as an artist today, with some hints at where I’m headed next.
ADRIAN: What artist’s & producer’s did you collaborate with on your ‘Simple Things EP’? What can your fans expect from your ‘Simple Things EP’?
Jarell Perry: I worked with some very talented producers on the come up right now, including Hassy B (“Here We Go Again,” “Lady Gaga“) and Manifest Music. There are features from west coast MCs Donte Peace and Def Sound. The tracks are very musical, and there’s raw simplicity to the way we’re telling stories. As I’ve gotten older I’ve become a bit of minimalist and learned how to approach the creative process with “less is more” kind of vibe. I think you’ll be able hear that clearly with these songs.
ADRIAN: As a songwriter you have Fat Joe’s comeback single featuring Chris Brown, “Another Round” on your resume. When did you realize that you were gifted at songwriting?
Jarell Perry: When I was in school I would post rough demos of my songs on Myspace, and once in a while would get a message from some kid across the world who said my song really helped them get through something tough. I was humbled and that’s when I knew there had to be something there. I just didn’t know what to call it. I really had no concept of what a songwriting career was until a few years back when I started discovering that some of my favorite songs were actually leaked demos for other artists. I took a break from being an artist to focus on making it in the industry through this ‘back door‘ of writing, and just really got a lot better at something I didn’t even know existed.
ADRIAN: You have performed for the the multi platinum selling artist Usher, how has that helped your confidence in performing? What did you learn from Usher?
Jarell Perry: I won a cover competition and got the chance to meet Usher at Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam’s studio in L.A. It was a really humbling experience. Usher is a legend and there’s never any question about his talent and his passion when he’s on stage or in the studio. I learned from him to go hard or go home, there’s no in-between.
ADRIAN: You are a writer, singer & performer, what is a typical working day like with recording, travel etc..?
Jarell Perry: Typical day for music for me starts at around 6 or 7pm and ends at 5 or 6 in the morning. I’m usually in the studio writing or more recently, rehearsing for upcoming shows. I’ve been doing a lot of overseas collab work lately so every month or so I’m flying out to meet someone half-way in New York or all-the-way in somewhere like Paris or Milan. It’s starting to get pretty crazy but I love to travel. Even if it makes life harder I’ll say yes because I’m always trying to see some place new.
ADRIAN: What other national artist have you collaborated with and written songs for? What other major label projects are you currently working on?
Jarell Perry: I’m currently working on songs for Chris Brown and Justin Bieber, and have done a lot of work with international DJ/producers like Rusko.
ADRIAN: How can your fans like your fan page and follow your career on social media?
Jarell Perry: I’m all over the internets and really dig interacting with the fans. @JarellPerry on Twitter. Facebook.com/JarellPerryMusic.
